First in the news and on everyone’s mind this week: the tragic death of Cory Monteith was confirmed to be addiction-related. Demi Lovato comments on the nature of the disease that killed Cory, and his death may cast light on the scope and sheer number of similar deaths that occur each year.
The other big story this week is a speech given yesterday by the nation’s “Drug Czar”, the National Drug Control Policy Director, R. Gil Kerlikowske. He stated in his speech that the only way to handle the addiction crisis is to treat it as a disease and provide appropriate treatment.
There also seems to be some controversy this week over whether “sex addiction” is actually a similar mechanism to substance abuse, or some other form of behavior. Check out these articles for more.
From all of us here at the Bel Air Center for Addictions, have a safe weekend!
