A new study shows that the effects of prenatal exposure to cocaine might not be evident in the brain at birth, but can have a dramatic developmental impact on brain and behavior alike.

Also under investigation are the exact chemical culprits behind the effects of heroin. If, as has long been known, heroin doesn’t work at opiate receptors like cocaine does, then what gives it such a kick? According to this article, it’s the byproducts that form as heroin is metabolized.

While I was unable to track down the original Washington Post article, this snippet over at addiction & recovery news is a look at one of the problems addiction treatment may face under the ACA — although the problem of too little treatment for too many patients has been something addiction treatment has been struggling with since its inception as a field of medicine.
